Can cats help with loneliness?

There's something wonderfully reassuring about coming home to a cat. Whether they're waiting by the door, fast asleep in their favourite spot or pretending they haven't missed you at all, they have a unique way of making a house feel like home.

In a nationally representative YouGov survey commissioned by the cat lovers club, 57% of UK cat owners said their cat has helped them combat loneliness.

Companionship comes in many forms

Cats may have a reputation for being independent, but anyone who's lived with one knows how quietly supportive and comforting they can be. They keep us company while we work. They follow us from room to room. They sit with us while we watch television. They become part of our routines and before long, part of everything we do.

Why cat owners feel such a strong bond

Every cat has their own personality. Some are playful. Some are affectionate. Some show their love by sitting exactly where you're trying to work! Whatever their quirks, they have an incredible ability to brighten ordinary days.

It's no surprise that more than half of cat owners told us their feline companion has helped them feel less lonely.
